We hope all of you were able to enjoy a day off of work or school in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Obviously one need not look any further for a more important change agent in our nation’s history. Let us all take time to not only read about his work and his “dreams”, but to try to embody and live out those dreams every day.
Taylor is on the road, and so the Monday Links will be making their appearance tomorrow or Wednesday. In the interim, we invite you to spend your slow Tuesday morning looking over some of our earlier posts. Though we’re only two weeks into Tropophilia, there have been some very thoughtful contributions from the whole team, and some of you might have missed the very earliest ones. Here is a list of our “feature” pieces of the past fortnight, in chronological order:
- Spokeo or Spooky-o? – Jarred looks at privacy through the lens of a social web aggregator.
- Just a Little Light Gym Reading – Taylor offers his thoughts on the Google Books project.
- Markets for Clean Energy…At Added Costs to Willing Consumers? – Taylor ponders the intersection of clean energy markets and consumer behavior.
- Starbucks and the trends of a saturated market – Dan asks if there is such a thing as too much information.
- The Google Reader Debate: What is a “friend”? What is “public”? What is “privacy”? – Jarred analyzes the outcry over a hasty move by “the” Internet giant.
- Who Owns the Social Graph? - Is it you, your “friends,” or Facebook? Jarred investigates.
- Diggings, Backward – Joel offers some opening thoughts on the history of change.
- Politics of the Web – Jarred reviews a few sources of political information on the web.
- Death of the Humanities? A response to Stanley Fish – Dan reacts to a controversial column in the New York Times.
- Accepted Performance Enhancements vs. Steroids – Taylor delves into this intriguing – and highly relevant – ethical dilemma.
- What is the Future of Music?, Jarred wonders.
- Memory fading? Aw, don’t sweat it. – Joel discusses the idea of change as represented by an almost-trashed treasure.
- “There’s Something In The Air”: How Apple Brings You Into The Flock, And Keeps You There – Jarred begins his pre-MacWorld descent into childlike wonder (i.e. hypnotism) with this personal tale of tropophilia.
- Steve Jobs on Reading – A comment by Steve Jobs sparks a fascinating discussion among readers in the comments.
- Philanthropy Online: Kiva – Taylor begins his series on philanthropy in the Internet age with a look at this popular microcredit site.
- The Problem with Anonymity – Dan shines light on the dark side of social networking.
- Spare Cycles: Distributing Computing Among Machines and Mind - Jarred looks at how otherwise-wasted mechanical and human energy can be put to better use.
We’re all really excited that we’ve had not only a large number of visitors, but also a great number of returning and contributing visitors. We hope you’ll keep coming back and joining in these conversations about change with your comments! Happy Tuesday!
